New BioComp Financial Forums
To say it nicely, the old private Profit and Dakota forums were "old-school" technology, so we just created a whole new community site based on the latest version of bulletin board software (phpBB).  Now we've got more users participating, more actively than ever, swimming in a huge pool of new features and capabilities.  You can private message another user, edit or even delete your posts after posting (fixes that "oops" problem that you always realize after hitting the Submit button!), attach documents, screenshots, trading bots, stops, manage your profile and all the other features you've come to expect in a professional board.

Over the years, we build bonds, associations and partnerships with customers and other vendors.  In this edition, we feature Trend Indicators, by James Slack-Smith.  James has been a long-time customer who has been studying market price trends since 1986, investigating many of the disciplines within the field.  James developed his trading experience working as an options strategist and trader for an equity options dealing desk in Sydney, Australia. Over the last seven years he has been developing risk management software for financial institutions as well as software for modeling market price trends.

"Dollar Mining" in Dakota: A Process for Profitable Systems
In the last issue, I talked about the "Deep Scanning" feature we just implemented in Dakota.  This feature searches all tickers on a system configuration to find ones that have smooth equity curves.  This is essentially a part of a "data mining" process for dollars, or "Dollar Mining".  There are caveats with this approach, as the nice looking equity curves found by "Deep Scanning" could be created by chance, so I have a process that I use to turn chance into fact.  This is what I do:

• I setup a swarm and run it on all tickers, popping up a Microsoft Word report on those exceeding an equity straightness criterion
• I look through the reports and save the ones I like, tossing away ones I don't like
• I look through the saved reports, select one, and try to reproduce it (I may have to adjust a bot to be a pessimist, perhaps, if the equity curve is smooth, but downward sloping)
• If it is reproducible on one run, looks promising, then I re-run it 30 times, a "Monte Carlo" test, saving the stats to a file (a standard feature of Dakota)
• I open the stats file in Excel and look at average of my  favorite performance metrics. If the results are consistently good in my judgment, then I likely have a good solution.
• I paper-trade the system for a while to see that it continues to work

While the feature is relatively new, this process appears to yield good systems, even on out-of-sample out-of-sample... that is, performance beyond when the system was created, in paper trading.  For example, the YHOO video system was found and made this way.  While young, the system is trading profitably and has gained equity.  I might note that the WCI video swarm has gained, and the NASD100 video swarm has gained, and so has the RYDEX Velocity swarm, and the AXP and the SIRI and the WAG system and the ... well, you get the point.
