Event Prediction in Oil and Gas Pipelines

Mission:
Prevent flooding of gas systems with oil from a two-phase flow pipeline.

Challenge:
Oil and gas flow together in a pipeline from off-shore rigs.  Excessive slugs of oil were flooding gas management systems.

Solution:
Process Intellect predicts significant liquid transients so that operators can take appropriate preparations.

Objective
A large oil company operates a pipeline from off-shore oil rigs to an on-shore oil and gas processing facility.  From time to time, significantly large slugs of oil would overflow slug catchers, flooding gas handling systems.  This would lead to shutdowns to clean and recover.  The objective is to predict the arrival of these oil slugs so that operators can prepare and prevent shutdowns.

The Methods
BioComp engineers came on site and familiarized themselves with the process.  A box was drawn around the portion of the process where the problem was occurring.   Flows of materials, process control points and information in and out of this box were identified, much like a mass and energy balance.  Data was collected on these attributes from the local process management system.  This data was modeled extensively using BioComp's iUnderstand analysis tools.

Results
It was found that the arrival of significantly large slugs of oil could be predicted hours in advance to 97-100% accuracy.
